See how engineered tension fabric structures can be stronger and more durable than traditional wood, steel, or concrete buildings.
Calhoun's engineered fabric structures are designed to meet structural, flame-retardant, weather-resistant, and natural force requirements so that they meet strict building codes. The steel framework provides all the structural support in a tension fabric building; the fabric acts as the protective cover, letting in natural light while keeping the elements out.
Long-Term Use
Engineered tension fabric structures are more suitable for long-term use. These buildings use a hot-dipped galvanized structural steel frame to hold the fabric in place and give it shape. The steel frame is corrosion-resistant and can endure generations of use, making it an ideal building option.
Tension fabric structures also use a durable HDPE fabric material that can withstand 150 mph winds and 300 lbs per square foot snow loads. Fabric covers can last from 15-20 years under normal conditions. Weather and ultraviolet radiation eventually wear down the material so replacement covers are inevitable like shingles on a roof. Some holes can be repaired, but loose-fitting or worn fabric should be replaced.
Faster Lead Times
Though the specific installation process may vary depending on the size and shape of the structure, the installation for engineered tension fabric structures is often much faster than traditional wood, steel, or concrete construction.
The construction of fabric buildings involves anchoring the steel frame and stretching the HDPE fabric over it. The process is quicker and less labor-intensive compared to traditional builds, offering a cost-effective solution without compromising quality.

Hiawatha, Kansas
Calhoun Super Structure, in collaboration with Greenfield Contractors, installed Ag Partners’ impressive 59,400 square-foot dry fertilizer terminal in a timely, efficient manner. The VP Series structure provides ample room for heavy equipment, fertilizer storage, and overhead space, while the natural-light interior creates a bright work environment.
Hoopeston, Illinois
Customizability and cost-efficiency remained top priorities for the customer. Calhoun's engineers included a customizable leg height, providing more space to elevate the fertilizer with an overhead tripper conveyor. A vertical mixer was also installed outside to transfer fertilizer directly to the loading truck.
Blencoe, Iowa
Given the Missouri River location, protecting assets from harsh weather conditions remained top of mind. As such, a three-foot-tall concrete stem wall was attached to the fabric to safeguard assets from potential flooding. Additionally, to easily transport fertilizer within the building, Calhoun engineers installed a Sackett-Waconia overhead tripper belt conveyor.
